A Little Something Extra

Not today, probably not tomorrow

We're not home. And we probably won't go home tomorrow either. We might actually be at the place we've dreaded since he had feeding issues in the NICU. That place is referred to as "oral aversion." Micah has no interest in a bottle. In fact, "no interest" is an understatement. He screams when he senses it's time to be fed. I won't bore you with all the details, but this is a really bad thing. The act of sucking builds muscles in a baby's jaw that form the foundation of speech development.

The upside to this new-found oral aversion is this: he possesses deductive reasoning capacity. That's great mental development. He realizes that suck+swallow=pain, so he just doesn't start the process so he doesn't experience the pain. Stay tuned for his next milestone: long division.

Praying that the therapists can work with Micah on his oral aversions. Praying for the pain to diminish so he will take a bottle again.

I am so sorry about all of these hurdles that Micah and his family have to jump over. I will keep praying until you are all out of the hospital!

We are so sorry you all did not get to go home as planned. I am wondering if an ng tube would be helpful, along with oral motor excercizes to make up for the lack of suck. This problem is really common with our kids, and a lot of people will work with ST to get OM excercizes to make up for this. I am sure someone would have suggested this if it was possible, but I just wanted to throw that out there. Still praying, and hoping that he can pass all of his "assignments" that let you take him home. God bless. Diane

Oh, goodness. I was so hoping to read the welcome home post. I'm so sorry you are experiencing this setback. Erin had oral aversion after surgery as well (and before). Just like Micah, she would cry at the site of the bottle and arch her back. I though we were in for a long road. Instead it didn't last long, as I've told you. I'm praying the same will be true for Micah! I'm trying to remember the oral/feeding specialist that helped me so much at CHOW. I think it was Jennifer, but I cannot be sure. Is there anyway you could work on this from home in a more relaxed environment? I remember wanted to just get home, but then I'm not very good in hospitals. Poor little guy, we are praying for no pain and for the whole situation! Kris
