Chillin' at the K's house in Atlanta

Hey, there's a doggy by me!

Wanna smell my sock?

Um, now the doggy is on my leg

Okay, it's kinda fun!

Nashville zoo trip

A super fun day with friends at the Nashville zoo.

Micah, Anna Kate, Brady, Nathan, and Brendan

This was Nathan and Brady back in 2005. Crazy!
Ann, me (and Matthew) and Mary

We have photos of the 3 of us in lots of fun places, and many of the photos were taken before we had digital cameras! This is a scanned photo from Mary's bachelorette party (1999!).

Micah at the zoo

The zoo had two beautiful white tiger cubs (born in Dec.)

Nashville photos

This is the "first" post from our vacation (yes, it's been five weeks and I'm finally getting around to it). I'm trying to do them in reverse order to make it easier for y'all to read since I'm going to do them all today.

Napping boys...

Mary and Micah

Mary's first photo with Micah (taken last March '08 when she came up to visit us)
Matthew being held by Anna Kate (age 2... she was born on Nathan's first birthday)

Micah getting a Daddy hug

Nathan (Vandy 2027?) in the courtyard at Owen GSM

Two sick boys. Time to go home.

For some reason, I didn't capture much of our Nashville leg on camera, except for our trip to the zoo. Maybe I was just tired?

Happy Heart Day, Micah

A year ago today, Micah's heart was fixed by Dr. G. It was a very long day, one that I won't likely forget. Some memories in the forefront of my mind include: Dr. G telling us "don't be surprised if you don't see me until 2 or 3:00 this afternoon" and then not seeing her until 8:30pm; hearing "Micah's lungs are sick" from the nurse who came out all day to update us; praying with a pastor from a church in Wausau who was there with a family whose baby girl was having surgery that day; being the last people in the surgical waiting room at 9:00pm after arriving there around 8:45am; seeing his heart beating through the tape over his open chest; this photo (don't link to it if you have a queasy tummy); and walking into the PICU and seeing a bunch of doctors looking at a ridiculous number of machines trying to figure out how to manage Micah's crazy high heart rate. I didn't realize early in the afternoon how bad things were. Mark's brother knew, though, when he called Mark's mom in the afternoon and she told him that Micah was still in surgery. Andy is an anesthesiologist and works on a lot of heart surgeries. He knew based on the amount of time that Micah was in the OR that they were having a difficult time getting him off bypass.

I'm so glad we don't have to go through that again. I don't know how families go through multiple heart surgeries. Micah's heart appears to be doing well. He saw his cardiologist last week and she heard the same level (mild to moderate) of regurgitation on the left side as she heard six months ago. He'll see her again in six months and she'll do another echo at that time.

Micah is growing very well. He's still being fed primarily through his intestines (the J-tube part of the GJ-tube), but we feed him a few hours a day through his G-tube. If I start feeding him through his G-tube and run it for 2 hours, he gets slightly over 3 ounces of formula. Two hours later, I "vent" his stomach and there's still formula in there so I know not to try more at that point or he'll get puky. That's how slowly his stomach and duodenum process food. For reference, Matthew takes 5 ounces and wants another 5 ounces just three hours later. We lower the rate at which Micah receives food overnight compared to daytime because his system slows down overnight, but without the overnight feeding his system would probably not be able to handle his needed volume. I'm thankful for the pump, though I've often wanted to throw it out the window.

Someone saw Micah last week for the first time and commented on how big he's getting and asked, "So, is he eating like a champ?" I know this guy didn't know what all we've gone through with the feeding stuff so I answered, "No, he still doesn't take anything orally," and went to the other room and cried for five minutes. Would we be dealing with all of this if it weren't for the paralyzed vocal fold he received during heart surgery? Hopefully not to this extreme, but we don't know for certain. I do believe it was the aspiration associated with the challenges of eating with a paralyzed vocal fold that caused his oral aversion in the hospital, resulting in him not taking anything by mouth by the time we came home. I look forward to the day that this child picks up a Cheerio, puts it in his mouth, gums it, and swallows it (and without puking).

Heart and feeding stuff aside, Micah is just a sweetheart who loves to make you smile and laugh. He cries when his stomach hurts and when you speak harshly to him while saying, "No," after he starts pulling off his glasses. But you can't go anywhere with him without getting lots of adoring looks, especially with his glasses on. Seriously, how could you not smile at this face?

And I couldn't pass up the opportunity to add this photo of Melissa and Micah. Melissa started helping me out here at the house over a year ago, before Micah's heart surgery. She's a nursing student at a university close to our house. She has become an honorary member of our family and we love her dearly.

Happy Heart Day, my sweet boy. And thank you, God, for Micah. What a gift!

More pics

What is he doing on my blanket?

Well, if he's here, I might as well play with him. It's kinda fun, actually.

Faces of Matthew

Pics of Matthew from the past four weeks:

Yes, he is a little piggy. At his 2mo checkup, he was in the 82nd percentile for his weight. Pretty impressive given he was born 4 weeks early. Using his adjusted age (for prematurity) he was off the charts. He is 2 weeks away from his 3mo birthday and he's almost too long for his 6mo sleepers. He's a very laid back baby. God knew that we just couldn't handle a fussy baby right now. Matthew's dedication is at church on Sunday. I'll post more photos after that. It would be great if I could get photos posted of our vacation prior to that. We'll see how tomorrow goes...

March photos - Micah

This is what Micah's feeding tube looked like before getting his new MIC-Key button. He had a button when he first got his G-tube in Feb 08. When he needed a GJ-tube, he could no longer have the low-profile button because he wasn't big enough yet. So he had this awful thing since last May. When he wasn't being fed he still had this ugly foley sticking out of him.

But now he's big enough for a GJ MIC-Key button:

First tooth at 14mos. (and yes, his glasses really are that dirty).

One of the "features" of Down syndrome is hypotonia so Micah is incredibly flexible. It gets better, but I don't have any others caught on film.

Lovin' the bath!

March photos - Matthew

Check out those cheeks! He's quite the little piggy.

Photo update - March with Nathan

Slacker that I am... I'm behind on lots of photos. Let's start with Nathan:

I took Nathan to the circus and he had a wonderful time eating popcorn and hot dogs. I think he also enjoyed the human canonball.

This just cracks me up. He made this hat in his playtime class for St. Patrick's Day.

New Nathanisms

I will post serious stuff later (I promise). But meanwhile, please enjoy Nathan's latest phrases.

When entering the men's room at church yesterday:
"Hi! What's your name? Are you here to go potty?"

On the way home from church:
N: "I like Mommy. And Gracie. And big Nathan. And Kenny and Eric. And Melissa."
Me: "What about Daddy?"
N: "No, I don't like Daddy. But I do love Daddy."

Leaving the house for the store just now:
"Daddy, I love you. But I don't like you."

Have you ever felt that way about someone YOU love? That's a resounding "yes" here at our house!

And might I just add... "GO GREEN! GO WHITE! GO STATE!"

Spring blog makeover

I've heard that it's officially spring (all evidence to the contrary with our SNOW this morning), so I've decided it's time to brighten things up around here. If you subscribe to my blog via email then you'll have to actually visit the blog by clicking the link above to see that I've changed the blog layout and background.

I was going to add pictures tonight. But I'm going to bed instead (after I feed little piggy). Maybe tomorrow...

In the meantime, may I just say, "GO GREEN!" My undergraduate alma mater, MSU, is headed to the Final Four!

World Down Syndrome Day

3 copies of the 21st chromosome (instead of 2). That's why 3/21 has been chosen as World Down Syndrome Day. I wish I had more time to be contemplative and share my heart, but there's just too much I would like to accomplish today. That seems to be the story of my life these days, which results in a major meltdown if I allow myself the time to start feeling sad about anything. Poor Mark.

Anyway, in honor of the day, I'll share the following poem (sorry for the repeat... I know I've shared it before).

The Creed of Babies with Down Syndrome
My face may be different
But my feelings the same
I laugh and I cry
And I take pride in my gains
I was sent here among you
To teach you to love
As God in the heavens
Looks down from above
To Him I'm no different
His love knows no bounds
It's those here among you
In cities and towns
That judge me by standards
That man has imparted
But this family I've chosen
Will help me get started
For I'm one of the children
So special and few
That came here to learn
The same lessons as you
That love is acceptance
It must come from the heart
We all have the same purpose
Though not the same start
The Lord gave me life
To live and embrace
And I'll do it as you do
But at my own pace

Where's that teleprompter when you need it?

I'll just post links to a couple of articles. Words fail me.
The letter from Sarah is great.
But I also like the article about Kolan McConiughey's abilities.

Okay, maybe words don't really fail me. I think what bothers me is that President Obama should be apologizing to everyone with disabilities, not just to the Special Olympics. He made it sound like if you're not good at something, then you must be disabled. It was truly the heart issue behind the comment that bothers me. What does that teach our kids about trying something at which they don't excel?

Couponing

I don't have much time to clip coupons these days, though I know there is plenty of savings to be had for our grocery budget. But when I find a super good deal, I make the effort. So I'm sharing one that's near and dear to my heart. For all you Huggies diaper users out there... I can't do as much justice to this deal as Jessica can, so here's a link to her explanation of how to get what I think is the best deal on Huggies. It involves online coupons and a trip (well, two) to Walgreen's. Hope you all enjoy your dirt-cheap diapers (seriously... less than $5 per pack!).

And if you're not a Huggies family, please consider taking advantage of this offer and buy some diapers to donate to your local shelter.

Big week

Monday 3/2 - Matthew's actual due date
Tuesday 3/3 - Matthew turned one month
Thursday 3/5 - Micah turned 14 months

Here's a fun video of Micah. The side-to-side movement is not lack of strength... it's his version of dancing. And he doesn't use the boppy behind him to prop on at all. I have it there for my own peace to be able to leave him sitting alone for a minute or two.

The past two weeks have been pretty cool for Micah. He's learned how to yank off his socks, pivot on his belly, do "so big," clap his hands, and "dance" on demand. He also got his first haircut (other than me trimming off the front last fall). His annual assessment is coming up this month. Please pray for my peace with the results.

I have many other pictures to post, but I'll have to do that later as the bed is calling me, especially given the loss of an hour of sleep tonight.
